Slate Roof Repair Contractor for Queens Buildings
Slate roof repair contractor work at Foundry Roofing is done slate by slate. We replace cracked, slipped and missing natural slate with matched pieces, working from ladders hung over the ridge so nobody walks on your roof. A roof with decades left keeps them.
We work on apartment buildings, brownstones, churches and commercial buildings.
Slate by slate
Are slate roofs repairable?
Yes. Cracked, broken, slipped and missing slates come out one at a time, and failed flashing is rebuilt, while the sound slate around them stays put. Natural slate that still rings solid has decades of service left. The exception is slate delaminating or flaking across whole slopes. Then patching only chases failures, and we will tell you that replacing the failing roof is the better spend.
One slate out, one slate in, nobody standing on the roof
Each repair swaps a single slate while the courses above and below it stay nailed down.
-
Hang the ladders
Roof ladders and hook ladders ride over the ridge and carry our weight, so no foot lands on slate.
-
Cut the old nails
The slate ripper slides under the broken piece, hooks each nail and shears it.
-
Slide in the match
The new slate, same color, size and thickness, salvaged where needed, goes up into the gap.
-
Fasten and check
Slate hooks, the repair clips you may have read about, or copper nails hold it. We check the underlayment underneath first.
Matching the slate: color, size and salvaged stock
Replacement slate that is a shade off or a quarter inch thinner shows from the street for the rest of the roof's life. Weathering matters too. Unfading Vermont gray and Pennsylvania black age differently from slate that weathers to green or buff.
We keep salvaged slate from older Queens roofs, sorted by color, length and thickness, and order new natural slate when a quarry match exists. The matched slate repairs in our project gallery show how it blends.
