Commercial Foam Roofing Sprayed Over Your Existing Roof
Commercial foam roofing is a Foundry Roofing specialty: we spray closed-cell polyurethane foam over existing flat and low-slope commercial roofs across Queens. You get one continuous roof, insulated and coated.
What goes on your roof, layer by layer
Four layers, deck to coating
Each is checked before the next goes down.
| Layer | What it does | What we check first |
|---|---|---|
| Layer 1Existing roof | Wet insulation cut out, surface cleaned and primed | Moisture scan and core cuts |
| Layer 2Closed-cell spray polyurethane foam | No seams, about R-6 per inch, tapered to the drains | Substrate temperature, dew point, wind |
| Layer 3Silicone or acrylic coating | Blocks UV. Silicone handles ponding, acrylic suits well-drained roofs | Foam cure, coating thickness |
| Layer 4 · topGranules on walk paths | Protect the foam at units and hatches | Service routes across the roof |
What foam fixes on a flat roof
Ponding, open seams and summer heat on low-slope roofs
Foam goes on in varying thickness, so we taper it and send standing water to the drains. With no seams, the usual flat-roof leak point is gone.
Insulation is continuous across the deck, cutting summer cooling load. Foam weighs little, so the old roof stays in place. We do commercial foam roofing on warehouses, apartment and mixed-use buildings, offices, retail stores, schools and churches.
- Ponding water
- Leaks at seams
- Heat and cooling cost
- No tear-off weight
Keeping a foam roof sealed: inspect, repair, recoat
Inspect, repair, recoat: how foam stays watertight
The coating wears first, so upkeep is three steps.
Step 1Inspection
Yearly and after major storms, we run a scheduled commercial roof walk with a written report.
Step 2Foam repair
Punctures and blisters are cut back to sound foam, resprayed and recoated.
Step 3Recoating
Before any foam is exposed, we renew the top coat with the silicone and acrylic coating systems we apply. That restarts the roof's service life.
Commercial foam roofing questions
Before you approve a foam roof
Can spray foam be used on a roof?
Yes, on flat and low-slope roofs with a dry, sound substrate. We confirm that with core cuts first.
What are the disadvantages of a spray foam roof?
Four. Spraying needs dry, calm weather, the coating needs periodic renewal, and overspray must be contained. Foam also cannot go over a saturated roof, which calls for a membrane tear-off and replacement instead.
What type of foam do roofers use?
Closed-cell, high-density spray polyurethane foam, about 3 lb per cubic foot. Open-cell insulation foam absorbs water and cannot carry foot traffic.
What did a recent foam roof job involve?
Astoria: a mixed-use building with rear ponding and leaking bitumen seams. We removed the wet insulation, sprayed tapered closed-cell foam to the drain and coated it in silicone. It now drains, and the leaks stopped.
