Warning signs

Six signs the valley is the leak

Valleys drain two slopes at once and show wear first.

Ceiling stain below a valley

Brown rings that track the valley line above.

Water in the attic

Damp sheathing or insulation along the valley rafter.

Loose or cracked valley shingles

Lifted edges let runoff slip under the course.

Rusted valley metal

Pitted liner passing water at the seams.

Granule loss

Grit collecting where the valley meets the gutter.

Moss or debris in the valley

Moss and leaves back runoff up, then form ice dams in winter. Keeping valleys cleared stops that backup.

Valley types

Open, closed-cut or woven: how each fails and gets fixed

The repair follows from how the valley was built.

Valley Built Leaks at Our repair
Open
Our usual re-line
Exposed metal liner Rust, lifted or open seams New metal liner over ice and water shield
Closed-cut One slope runs through, other slope cut Cut edge cracks or lifts Re-cut, new underlayment, re-shingle
Woven Interlocked shingles from both slopes Worn, cracked shingles Strip and re-weave, or convert to open metal
Repair steps

Four steps, rebuilt down to the deck

Our roof valley repair rebuilds the valley rather than caulking over it.

  1. Clear and lift

Debris out, valley shingles up, deck exposed.

  2. New underlayment

Ice and water shield goes down the full valley length.

  3. Flashing or liner

New valley flashing or a metal liner goes in, nailed at the outer edges only.

  4. Shingles and test

We re-lay or replace the shingles, seal the edges and water-test the valley. If shingle damage spreads onto the slopes, we price that too.

Active leak? We set an emergency tarp over the leaking valley the same day while it waits for the repair.

Roof valley repair questions

Three answers before we come out

Can you come the same day for an active valley leak?

Same day. We assess the valley and tarp it if the repair needs a second visit.

Can the valley be repaired, or does the whole roof need replacing?

The valley alone, when the slopes around it are sound. Brittle shingles and soft decking across the roof call for replacing a roof that is past repair, and we show you photos first.

Do you repair valleys on apartment buildings, mixed-use buildings, churches and condominiums?

Yes, these roofs are our specialty. We plan access, notify tenants of work hours and supply photos and scope for board approval.
